What is Balayage?

Darker Hair Balayage.png

Balayage is a freehand colour technique where colour is painted directly onto the hair — rather than using foils — to create a naturally blended, sun-kissed result. The word comes from the French verb balayer, meaning "to sweep", which describes exactly how the colour is applied: swept on in soft, graduated strokes.

Unlike traditional foil highlights, balayage creates a softer, more dimensional finish with less defined lines and a more natural grow-out. The result is low-maintenance hair that moves seamlessly between appointments — perfect for clients who want beautiful colour without the upkeep of a full head of foils every 6–8 weeks.

Balayage suits almost every hair type, length, and starting colour — from dark brunettes wanting subtle warmth, to blondes chasing a bright, platinum result.

FAQ

How long does a balayage appointment take?

Most balayage appointments at Entourage take between 2.5 and 4 hours depending on your hair length, density and the result you're after.
We'll give you a realistic time estimate at your consultation.

How often do I need to refresh my balayage?

One of the biggest advantages of balayage is the low-maintenance grow-out.
Most clients refresh their balayage every 3–5 months, compared to 6–8 weeks for traditional foil highlights. The exact frequency depends on how much contrast you like and how your hair grows.

Can balayage be done on dark hair?

Yes!
Balayage works beautifully on dark hair, though achieving a very light result from a dark base usually requires multiple sessions to protect hair health.
In your consultation we'll be honest about what's achievable in one visit and what a realistic colour journey looks like.

How much does balayage cost at Entourage Hair?

Our signature balayage service, The Bespoke, starts from $370.
This includes toner, a deluxe strengthening treatment, scalp massage and blow-dry finish.
View our full pricing on the Salon Menu.

Do I need a consultation before booking balayage?

We recommend a consultation for new clients, particularly if you're making a significant colour change or have previously coloured hair. Consultations are complimentary. You can book here
